Exercise Starting an exercise program can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to
be. There seems to be a
common misconception that you have to train
like an Olympian to be fit. This could not be further from the truth!
All you need is a good pair of shoes and an umbrella. That's right, you
don't need a gym membership. You don't need any equipment (we assume
that you have a floor.) There are three elements to exercise: Cardio, Strength, and Stretching.

 |
1. Walking - like the Nike ad says: " Just Do It!
"
You can start with whatever distance you feel comfortable with;
1/2 mile, 1 mile, or more. The key is doing it every day or at least 5
days a week. Gradually increase your mileage as you feel it getting
easier. You should walk at a pace that gets your breathing up. Just
strolling "isn't enough" Make sure to get yourself a good
umbrella. Walking in the rain is fun and you can't use that as an excuse
not to walk. |
Running is fine if you are at your ideal weight. If you
are heavier than you should be then PLEASE stick to walking. Running can
really damage your knees (among other things) even if you are at your ideal
weight.
2. Strength Training - you don't have to work out
like Schwarzenegger to do strength training. You will be amazed at what 5
minutes ever other day can do. Start with a few Push-ups, Squats, and
Crunches. You will see and feel huge results in a few months. Remember,
this something you are gonna do for the rest of your life, so you don't
have to be Jack LaLanne overnight.
3. Stretching - is very important and it is something you
can do in bed or on the floor.
